Scott Helker

There’s something formative in all of our childhoods. Scott’s direction was set at an early age when his father undertook to build his family’s houseboat for use on the Great Lakes. Scott assisted by painting bilges and completing jobs in impossibly cramped spaces, by learning marine navigation, and by obtaining all the charts and navigational tools. Eventually promoted to the prestigious NAVIGATOR position aboard the fiberglassed plywood-over-oak SEA SIX, Scott took it seriously. And he was fascinated by the charts for the coasts – dreaming of future salt water boating in the Chesapeake, Florida, California and the Pacific Northwest – all subsequently achieved!.

A degree in Mechanical Engineering, military service as a nuclear propulsion officer in submarines, and a career in consumer product manufacturing management eventually led to – ownership of a yacht brokerage business and establishment of the Helmsman Trawlers line. Throughout their married life together Scott and Lisa have owned a wide variety of boats and generally kept boating as their lifelong passion – and as full-time liveaboards, their very lifestyle.
