Helmsman Trawlers + 2022 Rendezvous = So Much Fun!

Helmsman 2022 Rendezvous Highlights

Helmsman Trawlers was thrilled to bring owners together last month for the 2022 Rendezvous. We had owners arrive by keels and wheels to Point Hudson Marina in Port Townsend for a weekend filled with friends, treats and fun.

We were fortunate to have a beautiful weather weekend, experienced good local food, music and even had a chance to take in the Rhododendron Festival Fun. It was a great way for our Helmsman owners to get together, talk boats and cruising.

Helmsman Trawlers looks forward to returning to Port Townsend in 2023 to meet with friends new and old.
Until then enjoy cruising.

You can catch a glimpse of the event in the Helmsman Trawlers Rendezvous Highlights video below.

Cooking Aboard: Good Design Makes for an Enjoyable Experience

Cooking Aboard A Helmsman Trawlers: Good Design Makes for an Enjoyable Experience

As any boater knows a successful cruise relies just as much on keeping the crew well fueled as keeping the vessel well fueled. Cooking while underway should add to the overall boating experience – not be a draining chore.

Helmsman Trawlers® understands the importance of a good galley to making cooking enjoyable. We pay special attention to the layout and features found in our galleys. The result? Cooking and eating aboard a Helmsman Trawlers® becomes a part of the overall pleasure of a boat trip!

Durable and Gorgeous, with Minimal Maintenance

Step aboard a Helmsman Trawlers® and you’ll find an inviting space rich with warm woods, thoughtful lighting, and a perfect layout for cooking and entertaining. Plus ample storage with plenty of drawers, cabinet space and removable cushions in the settee that reveal storage lockers. There are also additional cabinets throughout the salon.

Additionally, the windows in the galley space all open, a feature not found on all motor yachts. This allows for fresh sea breezes and great ventilation.

We aim to make time spent aboard focused on the cruising experience, not worrying about if this or that is working right, or what sort of attention a boat element may or may not need. In galley design we’ve chosen components that combine durable, long-lasting beauty with minimal maintenance requirements.

Countertops: Elegance Made to Last

On Helmsman Trawlers®  the countertops are made of Caesarstone®  quartz mineral. With quartz being the hardest stone surface, even harder than steel, these countertops are sure to withstand the test of anything encountered while underway. Additionally, Caesarstone®  countertops are nonporous, non-toxic, require no sealants or wax, and do not host bacteria, mold, or mildew – so they remain safe and hygienic, leaving you more time to enjoy cruising and less time cleaning. The galley counters are edged with teak fiddles, to contain spilled liquids and which serve as convenient handholds when necessary.

Caesarstone®  also enables great flexibility in surface design with a wide variety of patterns, various finishes, and rich colors to choose from – a customization that helps you make the galley feel all your own.

Dependable Galley Components

In choosing galley components we opt for proven design. For example, the Force 10 propane range and oven is a reliable, classic standard built from stainless steel.

The force 10 range and oven.

Our standard galley includes:

  • A propane Force 10 galley range, with the option to substitute a Kenyon electric induction cooktop or a Miele propane cooktop and with a Samsung convection oven/microwave,
  • A microwave, if the convection oven / microwave is not selected,
  • Nova Kool 9 cubic foot refrigerator/freezer,
  • A Moen 1.5 basin sink with teak wood coverings, with an option to choosing a single basin to maximize counterspace.

Whether it’s boiling up fresh caught crab on the stove or putting together simple sandwiches on the go this galley is well-equipped for all your dining needs.

High Quality Woodwork

The fine teak woodwork found aboard Helmsman Trawlers®  is something we really take pride in. It requires great time and attention to accomplish. Our teak is varnished with many layers of two-part hand brushed varnish, resulting in strength and water resistance – not to mention lending a warm, comfortable feel to the interior of the vessel.

The salon table is also composed of this durable teak and when folded out reveals a gorgeous compass rose inlay. The table, combined with the seating arrangement, makes for an overall inviting and comfortable dining and relaxing space for you and your guests.

An Irish Helmsman Trawlers®

An Irish Helmsman Trawlers®

Better than a Pot o’ Gold at the End of a Rainbow: An Irish Helmsman Trawlers®

Remote, tucked away coves with green rolling hills behind. Crystal clear lakes and rivers. Quaint seaside villages with good food and drink at the local pub. With 4,675 miles of coastline (not to mention inland waterways), Ireland has some of the most majestic and lush boating grounds to be experienced.

And now Helmsman Trawlers® is helping new Irish owners enjoy experiences and create memories on these waters. With our first European delivery of a Helmsman Trawlers® to Ballykeeran, Ireland in December we’ve been interested to learn first-hand about Irish cruising, where the new owners have been so far, and where their dream Irish boating destinations lay.

Discovering Ireland by Boat

From the spectacular and rugged west coast to the historic Enniskillen Castle on the River Erne to the hustle and bustle of the city of Dublin, whether inland or along the coast, Ireland is a country to be experienced by boat. A Helmsman Trawlers® 38E is a great choice for boating these waters as it is safe for both coastal and inland situations. It is also well-suited for locking and with a folding mast or arch it has a low bridge clearance of under 12’ / 3.6 meters.

On the coastal side, the striking terrain and craggy coastline of west and southwest Ireland makes for intriguing boating grounds, plus has plenty of safe moorage for anchorage. The region of West Cork and Kerry are most popular in the Southwest for cruising, and on the west coast Killary Harbour, Westport, and Silgo are often sought after by boaters for their incredible beauty.

On the inland side, Ireland is home to 621 miles of navigable canals and waterways. From the woodland valleys, ancient hinterlands, and collection of quaint villages in the Barrow Navigation waterway in the south, to the stretches of open water along historic plains of the Lower Bann Navigation in Northern Ireland, cruising inland is a picturesque way to enjoy the country. Not to mention enjoying the use of Ireland’s extensive lock system. The canals and locks of Ireland were first constructed over 250 years ago to allow the movement of goods like turf, whiskey, bricks – and, of course, Guinness – but are now enjoyed mostly by recreational boaters.

Then there are the charming streets, historical architecture, and cultural events of Dublin. There are several marinas in the surrounding area, and a few in Dublin proper. What a way to visit this historic capitol – from the comfort of your own boat!

An Irish Helmsman Trawlers®

Irish owners Steve and Margaret took delivery of their Helmsman Trawlers® 38E in December 2021 and have already made good use of it. After being without a boat for some time their favorite memory so far is of the very first time taking the boat out with Helmsman Trawlers® company owners Scott and Lisa Helker, who traveled to Ireland for this first European offload.

Since the weather has been unpredictable during the wintertime Steve and Margaret have kept their boating to short trips so far, staying in Ireland’s interior waterways traveling from Athlone to Banagher County Offaly, then on to Terryglass.

They have also been to Garrykennedy, County Tipperary – their favorite location so far – where they enjoyed the scenery and a good pub.
An Irish Helmsman Trawlers® Lough Derg
Lough Derg Heading West
For cold weather cruising the couple have enjoyed the warm interior of their boat, and having, “…panoramic views is brilliant, especially for winter cruising.” They add that, “underway, the best thing has to be the vibration free and quiet passage we can now enjoy.”

Looking toward the boat season really beginning in March, owners Steve and Margaret have many cruising plans in mind. This summer they will participate in the Lough Derg Boat Rally with family, which is happening again for the first time since the pandemic began. The Rally includes fun for everyone, with music, food, workshops, and games. They are also planning on participating in the Shannon Boat Rally and will head to the Shannon Navigation in the late summer for a few weeks to do it.

We can’t wait to learn more about this Helmsman Trawlers® making way through the idyllic Irish countryside. Stay tuned to hear more – and get the recipes for what sort of underway dishes cooking-enthusiast Margaret has to share!

Invention from Necessity: Helmsman Trawlers® Canadian Delivery

Helmsman Trawlers® Canadian Delivery

In service to its customers, Helmsman Trawlers’® recent boat delivery was a series of firsts: first offload in Canada, first multiple-boat offload, and first cross-border underway prior to full commissioning. But with a lot of effort on planning, logistics, and contingency preparations the Helmsman Trawlers® team’s triple threat of:

1) Mastery of the offload process, with special attention to customer service,
2) Expertise in boat handling and shipboard systems, and
3) Well-built boats that are seaworthy from the get-go,

…the offload and transport were a success. The vessels are now having electronics installed and other commissioning items performed in Seattle before being delivered to their Canadian customers.

Offload in Surrey, British Columbia

With worldwide shipping in continued overload, Helmsman Trawlers® was unable to obtain direct transport to Seattle without delaying their deliveries. Out of necessity and in close cooperation with the Helmsman Trawlers® yard, special arrangements were made to bundle three boats (one 38E and two 43Es) aboard a chartered ship in China, with subsequent loading aboard a cargo carrier with shipment direct to Surrey, BC.

After a foggy discharge from the cargo ship in Surrey the three boats were moored overnight at the Westbay Sonship yard on the Fraser River, and then prepared to get underway. The following day this small fleet began the journey to Seattle’s Lake Union for commissioning.

Making Good Time in Calm Seas

Though the offload and transit days were busy, there was the reward of beautiful views on the trip down to Seattle. The crews were blessed with good weather and calm seas for the 120 NM run, and the boats were safely tied up at the Seattle docks just two days after unloading from the cargo ship.

The transit proved a good shakedown for the new boats, and excellent training and familiarization for the new boat owners who joined the cruise. The trip once again proved the readiness of Helmsman Trawlers® from the very beginning.

Quality In Every Way

When the electronics installation and commissioning processes are completed the boats will be captained by Helmsman Trawlers® personnel (one at a time this time!) — back north to be delivered to their Canadian owners. As seen with this inventive offload, Helmsman Trawlers®’ commitment to quality doesn’t stop with building boats but extends to all aspects of their business – including customer service and even the vessel delivery process.
